Parasites, Malware, and Adware DIY Removal
While you are out here surfing for free
stuff , your computer is picking up many things that you're not aware
of.
If you notice your computer slowing down, have extra toolbars in your
browser or start getting tons of pop-ups you might be infected with
adware, parasites or a dialer (these are all installed without your
knowledge), Virus detection programs do not stop these things.
Here are a few things to keep your system clean for free:
Don't ever say yes to a pop-up that asks if you want to download something
that ends in .exe when you didn't ask for it and were trying to view
a movie, or a picture.
For more information on parasites and to have your browser scanned for
free go to doxdesk.
To remove some of these nasty things automatically try Ad-Aware
standard edition, free.
What Ad-Aware misses Spybot-S&D
(Search and Destroy) gets.
Run a system scan with your virus detection software.
There is a great free program that keeps spyware from installing in
the first place, SpywareBlaster.
Once you get all the spyware, parasites,
dialers and virus infections off your machine install a software firewall.
But I have a hardware firewall (I don't need no stinkin software firewall!
), you say. Well that hardware firewall will stop things from coming
into your computer from the internet but it will not tell you when something
is going out.
Don't believe me? Go to The
Gibson Research Corporation and let them probe your computer's ports
with ShieldsUP. This will show how effective your firewall is. Chances
are if you have a hardware or software firewall you should do pretty
good on this test. Now download LeakTest and run it. This will check
on things getting out from your computer. With all the driveby installations
of malware on the internet you never know when something is trying to
get out from your computer. If you don't have a software firewall get
one free from Zone
Labs. ZoneAlarm is free, finding it on the Zone Labs site might
be a little tricky (it really is there). You can also download it from
Download.com.
Just search for zone alarm and pick the one that says "License:
Free". Install ZoneAlarm and run LeakTest. ZoneAlarm should alert
you that LeakTest is trying to use the internet. You should delete LeakTest
after you're done testing (some Virus protection programs see it as
a virus).
Keep these programs (Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster
and Spybot-S&D) updated, new stuff comes out often.
Run the programs every week or when you think something is wrong.
Don't forget to run a system scan with your Virus software every week
(also should be updated weekly).
While the free programs are good, this one program will take care of the spyware and virus protection at a great price.
AVG Anti-Malware

Anti-Virus protects from viruses, worms and trojans
Anti-Spyware protects from spyware, adware and other malicious programs
