Search Engine Optimization, (SEO)Search Engine Optimization is something that most people discover after they see that their website has very little traffic. Build a better mouse trap and they will come, might have worked in the past BUT it doesn't work on the Internet. The fortune 500 companies could put up an ugly or a super website and still have tons of visits. They have brand recognition and people go to that site, i.e. hsn.com, toysrus.com, volvo.com, verizon.com........... The rest of us have to be found by our visitors. The search engines and directories such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN are where most people go to find that special something. So all you have to do is come up in the first search engine results page (SERP) and you are on your way to a never-ending supply of sales leads. Now, you type your company name into the search engine and nothing comes up. You try a keyword string like "mortgage loans", and only 13,700,000 results show up and you are not on the first 100 pages. What are you going to do to get ahead of those other 13 million companies? You might go to Google and search for "Search Engine Optimization" and go to every SEO site on the first ten pages. After weeks of reading about Black Hat SEO, doorway pages, cloaking, keyword stuffing and "SEO Best Practices", you are more confused then when you started. Don't feel bad; SEO is a fulltime job for the people at the top of the SERPs. We don't use any method that might get you banned from the search engines. We focus on content, site design and the proper use of tags. Some of the worst looking sites on the web are making tons of money because they have the content the surfer wanted. Yes, I said surfer. Your content has to be written for your visitors not the search engines. You wouldn’t be reading this if all I did was to stuff a group of keywords into some silly sentences to get found by search bots. What the search engines are looking for is content. They provide a service to their visitors and want to send them to a site that will satisfy them. The way they do this is to send out spiders, robots, or bots that search the Internet for content. Once they find your site they will read your content and apply their secret algorithm. I say secret algorithm because the search engines do not make public how they rate your page in the SERP. Each search engine also has an algorithm of its own and they are all different. That is one of the reasons SERPs vary between search engines for the same keywords and keyword phrases. You and your web designer are very happy with the look and feel of your Flash website but spiders do not play nice with Flash sites; all they see is an image, and have no way of reading the content of the page, yet. The content should be visible in HTML to your visitor and not hidden in an image or Flash movie. This does not mean that if you have a Flash site you will never get indexed and do well in the SERPs. You just have more to do! Your pages should have keywords in the title as well as the URL and those same keywords should be in the content and your meta description. Picking the correct targeted keywords and keyword phrases is key. Think of what your customer would search for to find a company like yours and then use it in your content. We can help you find the right combination of keywords and keyword phrases to get you a better result in the SERP. I have only shown you the tip of the SEO iceberg in
this short article. Do not expect results in a week! It can take 90
to 180 days to get indexed in the major search engines and they have
total control over that. Since the search engines are always changing
the way they evaluate a site, using best practices in the beginning
will lower the total cost of ownership over time.
