Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Best PracticesBest Practices means ethically designing a site that is both surfer and search engine friendly without using underhanded SEO techniques. This includes the HTML, content, keywords and phrases. Clients are sometimes misinformed as to what an SEO consultant can do. Some believe that we can get their site moved up in the search engine page results by using voodoo or praying to the google god, while not changing any of the elements of their site. Well, if your site is already in the search engines and you are not in the top 1000 in SERPs? Do you really think nothing needs to change? In a perfect world the SEO and site design would be done at the same time. Truth is, most people only think about it when they can’t find any mention of their website on the search engines. This is the time to bring in that magical SEO guy. What is an ethical consultant going to do that your web designer hasn’t done? Well, don’t expect a quick fix. Whatever has to change will take time to filter through the search engines. But the planning for the changes comes first. Starting from the top of your main page and working down:
The one-minute or elevator commercial would be a good thing to cover now. If you had 60 seconds to tell somebody about your product or service what would you say? This information should be on your main page. Your relevant phrases and keywords should be in your product presentation on the main page. Save the I love my company and we love our customers for the “about us” page. Why use phrases and not just keywords? Chances of being found for the only company that makes an Interoceter is great by just using the name of the product. But search for “lawyer” and you might be number 124,000,000. Using a phrase like “Real Estate Attorney in Atlantic City” in your content will bring you more targeted visitors and worst case, to number 1,290,000 in the SERPs. I’ve done my magic and you have moved you up past almost 123,000,000 lawyers. Send the check $$$$$$$! Relevant links from other websites are also a way to improve your SERPs. Writing good content (HINT) will make other webmasters want to link to you. Some SEO companies say they can guarantee where you are going to come up in the results (I’ve got this very nice bridge in NYC that crosses the East River and connects to Brooklyn for sale) and can submit your site to thousands of search engines (count the ones you use and multiply by 10 or 100 does the number come close to 1000?). If you read the “fine print” it says “search engines and directories”. FFA (Free For All) link pages are usually included in this number. FFAs are email-harvesting sites that offer you a free one-way link to your site. Your link will be visible on the page for a very short period of time since they use the FIFO (first in first out) rule and automated submission software is constantly updating the sites. Besides not getting a text link back to your site, your email inbox will get jammed with junk mail from these sites. Does any of this stuff seem like rocket science (OK, maybe the Interoceter thingy)? Did I mention good content written for the surfer and not the search engines?
